Light the cone. The smoke runs down, not up.

Smoke that runs downhill

A backflow cone has a hollow channel through its middle. As it burns, smoke is drawn down that channel and leaves through the base, cooler and heavier than the air around it. So instead of rising, it slides down the burner.

The sculpture then decides where it goes: over a ledge, along a branch, into a bowl. A still room and the right cone make all the difference.

How to use a backflow incense burner

Three shelves

  1. Backflow incense burners

Resin and ceramic burners: dragons, hands, ponds, a teapot. From £6.99.

  2. Backflow cones

Satya and Elements cones, sold in sets. A burner only flows as well as its cone.

  3. Cone burners and ash catchers

Holders for ordinary cones and sticks, for when the smoke can rise.

When the smoke won't fall

It is nearly always one of four things. Check them in this order.

  1. A draught. An open window, a fan or a radiator below will lift the smoke. Try a still corner.
  2. The wrong cone. Ordinary cones are solid. A backflow cone has a hole in its base.
  3. The cone isn't seated. The hole has to sit over the burner's channel, flat and centred.
  4. A blocked channel. Ash and resin build up. Clear it with a cotton bud once it's cold.

Questions people ask

What is backflow incense?

Backflow incense uses cones with a hollow channel and a hole in the base. On a backflow burner, smoke drawn down through the channel comes out cooler and full of particles, so it is denser than the air and sinks, flowing down the burner like a waterfall.

Do your backflow burners come with cones?

Our burners are sold without cones unless the product page says otherwise. Add a box of backflow cones from our cones range. Normal solid cones will burn but the smoke will rise.

Where do you ship from?

Every order is dispatched from our UK warehouse, so there are no customs charges on UK orders.

How long does delivery take?

Orders are dispatched from our UK warehouse in 1–2 working days, then take 2–3 working days by tracked delivery. See our delivery page for details.

Can I return something?

Yes. You have a 14-day right to cancel, starting the day after you receive your order. See our returns page for how to send items back.
